Fellow Busriders...
Lately I have been archiving, gathering stacks of Dads artifacts from improbable places around the farm. I pile these in Dads office where Mom, Stephanie, Sunshine and Shannon clean and sort the piles of manuscripts, art, notes, journals, letters, doodles, photos, newspaper clippings, costumes, props, posters, film canisters, and various video and audio tapes. We are doing this partly for the IRS…. so they can tax us heavily on the street value on this estate list that we must provide, and partly because the stuff was deteriorating in the moisture and farm dust where sat. A couple boxes of dusty, faded labeled, unboxed cassette audiotapes became one of my side jobs, to sorted them and transfer them to CD. On these tapes are some very intimate moments with Dad…up late talking or singing into the microphone. There is a whole category he called "Nintendo Poetry", he would gather every Casio keyboard and drum machine around and play them all at once with a rapid chaotic tempo. Into this mayhem Dad would sing old folksongs or favorite poems or even make up a song or poem in the moment, getting lost in reverb and echo till the roosters start crowing. Some of the pearls are actually pretty good...even professional…a real look into Dads mind as he fills the gaps of his late-night insomnia. Here it is at last Item #A03 "Nintendo Poetry #1" on CD72 minutes $17.00 Item #A04 "Nintendo Poetry #2" on CD72 minutes $17.00 (PS part two is done now!) Never Get Off The Bus! Zane |

ACID TEST VOL.2 SANFRANCISCO STATE 10/1/66 Item #A21 One week before the law that made LSD illegal in California was to take effect; Ken Kesey snuck back from his hideout in Mexico to attend the San Francisco State College Acid Test. Word on the street was that Kesey had made a deal. He didn’t! The set-up was with Kesey, Jerry, Mt. Girl etc. off in a different hidden room secretly microphoned and wired so people could hear him and he could hear them and interact with the crowd in the auditorium. This didn’t happen until around 4am. All of this was being broadcast by the local radio station that also recorded it with a professional reel-to-reel tape recorder. Ed Perlstein recently found this gem preserved in the Bay Area Music Archives, and sent a digitally re-mastered (but unaltered) DAT. Nest generation Prankster Simon Babbs has enhanced, the sound, divided it into tracks, and created CD through Intrepid Trips, he burns these CDs individually for you. Versions of this Acid Test have emerged through the years from amateur recordings of the broadcast, but this CD with its pristine recording from the location are a window into time! With Ken Kesey on guitar and vocals, Dale Kesey on violin, Hugh Romney (Wavy Gravy) and Mountain Girl (Carolyn Garcia) backup and side-pranks, Jerry Garcia on Organ, and Steve Newman was engineering. The tracks are labeled as such:

ACID TESTS VOL. 1. Item #A01 By the Merry Band of Pranksters By Kesey, Babbs, and the Pranksters. A CD, re-release of the hard to find Acid Test LP. A studio recording session, from San Francisco in 1965. The Pranksters took over the place early in the evening and finally had it wired to their satisfaction early in the morning. The "Band" kept getting higher as the recording progressed, by dawn the tracks had been laid down, and the studio owner had gone irreparably mad. Also on this CD is the only other "professional" studio recording by the Pranksters, called "Red White and Blue Meet Black." This is an invitation for the Hells Angels to join the Pranksters in La Honda for a....bash. Editing, dubbing and mixing were done while hiding in Mexico later that year. Slated to be released in 1967, the record company got scared, so it sat in the archives, till now. $17.00. |
